Pilot Scheme, Thaxted

Trumpington Meadows

A country park created by Grosvenor as part of a new 1,200-home community. We worked on behalf of the Wildlife Trust negotiating contractual structures that allowed them to take on a 115-year Section 106 liability and a financial endowment for its long-term management.

Our Work

The first biodiversity offsetting scheme of its kind in the UK. Planning had been refused for 47 new homes on ecological grounds. We overturned the refusal by identifying a better habitat site and negotiating favourable terms, as well as providing expert evidence to the planning inquiry.

Lower Valley Farm

We established this scheme in South Cambridgeshire, ideally situated within the Cambridge Nature Network and adjacent to a SSSI. Appointed on a long-term contract by Cambridgeshire County Council, we’re overseeing the entire project, coordinating all stages, and brokering the biodiversity units created to local developers.

We negotiated terms for a 25-year lease for 170 acres of compensatory habitat for the latest expansion to DIRFT II on behalf of BCN Wildlife Trust.

National Highways

We conducted market analysis to identify existing and pipeline environmental initiatives in the vicinity of the A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet scheme and shortlisted initiatives which presented significant opportunities for environmental enhancement and improvements to ecosystem services.

Our unique expertise in this sector allowed us to provide clear recommendations on contractual structures that would allow National Highways to secure biodiversity units, while the risk and liabilities associated with conducting the habitat creation and long-term management would sit with the initiative provider.

This process has identified significant opportunities for National Highways to support local environmental initiatives that have potential to deliver meaningful and lasting environmental and social outcomes through the delivery of off-site BNG.
